A two-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after he was struck by a bus in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to Chatham Street in Hamilton North at around 8am on Monday morning after reports a child had been hit by a bus.

Paramedics then tended to the young boy who was transported by NSW Ambulance crews to hospital with leg injuries.

The two-year-old is now at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

The bus driver has also been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Inspector Jim Duffy from NSW Ambulance said the scene was a challenging one to attend.

“The leg injuries were severe, so paramedics stabilised the patient and tried to manage the pain,” Mr Duffy said.

“The patient remained conscious throughout.”

“This was a very challenging job to attend. I can’t stress enough the danger that motor vehicles pose to children – and the need for constant vigilance around roads.”

Chatham Road is closed, and local diversions are in place between Griffith and Clyde Streets.
