As rain from the atmospheric river pummels Oregon, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the northwest portion of the state from noon Thursday through late Friday night.

If heavy rainfall continues as predicted, rivers and creeks could overflow onto some roads, as well as, other low-lying areas. NWS says that they are most concerned with the potential of river flooding.

With the rainfall, the NWS is urging particular caution in areas of steep terrain and recent wildfire burns. Excessive runoff may cause landslides or debris flows.

The flood watch affects the Northern Cascades, the Columbia River Gorge and the Willamette Valley from Salem to the north. Oregon’s central and northern coast and Coast Range could also see flooding.
