NORTHERN VIRGINIA/DC — The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Washington, D.C., area, including parts of Northern Virginia, until 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of rain through the evening, with localized amounts of up to 4 inches possible, the NWS said in its alert issued at 5:50 p.m. Monday.

Heavy rain in a short amount of time may result in rapid rises of water on small creeks and streams and in urban areas, according to the forecast.

The flood warning is in effect for the District of Columbia, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Alexandria, Falls Church and a small part of Prince William County around Manassas.

In the Fredericksburg area, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday, the NWS said.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” the NWS said in its alert.
